News – MobileManDan Fri, 03 Jul 2020 08:13:46 +0000 en-US hourly 1 News – MobileManDan 32 32 151262807 VODAFONE FIRST TO SHOWCASE NEXT PHASE OF 5G TECHNOLOGY Fri, 03 Jul 2020 08:13:44 +0000 ONE YEAR ON FROM 5G LAUNCH, VODAFONE FIRST TO SHOWCASE NEXT PHASE OF 5G TECHNOLOGY
  • Vodafone first in the UK to showcase next phase of 5G technology with new network built at Coventry University

  • Next phase of technology will deliver transformational benefits of 5G, including factory automation and mission critical services

One year on from launching 5G in the UK, Vodafone has become the first UK operator to showcase the next phase of 5G technology, with a new network built for Coventry University.

The new network, which uses what is known as ‘Standalone’ 5G technology, will be used to show the true benefits of 5G, including ultra-low latency, guaranteed speed performance, and the Internet of Things on a never-before-seen scale.

Vodafone UK’s Chief Technology Officer, Scott Petty said: “This is a landmark in our 5G journey, just one year on from launch. 5G today is all about capacity and increased speeds. It’s giving people the best mobile experience ever, but it’s only the tip of the iceberg of what 5G can do. With this new live network we’re demonstrating the future potential of 5G and how it will be so valuable to the UK economy.

“This new phase of 5G starts to deliver on the incredible capabilities of 5G that have had so much attention, but haven’t yet been brought to life. From here, we will really start to see 5G make a difference to the way organisations think about being connected, and what’s possible with connectivity in the future.”

Coventry University, recognised for its innovation and excellence in digital teaching, will use the new 5G network to trial state-of-the-art virtual reality learning technologies to support training for student nurses and allied health professionals, as part of its ambition to be the leading university for 5G-enabled technology.

Professor John Latham CBE, Coventry University Vice-Chancellor, said: “We are delighted to be working with Vodafone to house the UK’s first standalone 5G network. This will help us continue to change and enhance the way students learn.

“Being the first university in the UK to have this next phase of 5G technology is the first step on our journey to creating a 5G campus, and we will soon be able to reveal how we will use this technology to maximise the potential of virtual reality teaching for our Health and Life Sciences students.”

To further support the university’s 5G ambitions, Vodafone has also installed Ericsson’s 5G Radio Dot System in the university’s Disruptive Media Learning Lab and National Transport Design Centre. The indoor technology will deliver fast, high capacity 5G in key buildings to support its innovative teaching and learning.

To deliver the UK’s first Standalone 5G network and a roadmap of future breakthrough demonstrations, Vodafone has teamed up with Ericsson, MediaTek, OPPO and Qualcomm – four technology leaders at the cutting edge of 5G development.

When a customer connects to 5G today, they are using a mix of 4G and 5G together. This is the first phase of 5G, and its main benefit is adding more capacity to the network, which means faster speeds and a more reliable connection.

This next phase of 5G is totally independent from 4G, that’s why it’s called ‘Standalone’. It opens up far more possibilities to revolutionise how consumers and businesses will connect. Important technology features of the new network include:

  • network slicing – enabling mobile operators to offer customers dedicated portions of their network with guaranteed performance. This is important for the introduction of 5G into industries like manufacturing

  • edge computing – bringing computing power closer to the customer, leading to much quicker network response times, which are vital for virtual and augmented reality technologies in the workplace

  • ultra reliable, low latency communications – which will be a key part of bringing about efficiency benefits like full factory automation, and will enable mission critical services that could enhance the performance of autonomous vehicles

One year ago, on 3 July 2019, Vodafone switched on 5G in seven UK cities. Since launch, Vodafone has added 5G to 37 more places in the UK and massively expanded coverage in launch cities. Vodafone has also built 5G in 70 locations across Ireland, Italy, Germany and Spain, and is the only UK operator to offer 5G access when customers are roaming abroad.

    BT reveals how the UK adapted in 100 days of lockdown Wed, 01 Jul 2020 11:54:58 +0000 Half of Brits have changed their habits for the better: BT reveals how the UK adapted in 100 days of lockdown
    • Keeping connected – Over half of the UK (53%) has been using technology more often and in different aspects of their lives during lockdown
    • Upskilling the UK through tech – Over a third (35%) agree that they’ve discovered new skills they will keep using after lockdown
    • Work / Life Balance – As commuting times reduce the working day now starts at 9am rather than 8am according to call data
    • Looking to the future – Half of Brits claimed they changed their habits for the better during lockdown

    1st July, London – As the UK reaches 100 days of lockdown, BT reveals how the nation has embraced technology to overcome the changes to daily life. Over half of Brits are now using technology more than ever to work from home, beat boredom, stay fit and keep connected with friends and family. As lockdown begins to lift and the nation looks to the future, research and data from BT tells the story of Britain in lockdown and finds the majority of the UK believe that some new habits are here to stay.

    Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer division: “The past 100 days have completely changed how we live and interact with each other. We’ve all had to adapt how we go about our daily lives, from the ways we learn, work, shop, keep active to how we connect with each other. Technology has been key to navigating this new world and as a nation we’ve been embracing its potential with over a third of us developing new skills.

    It’s clear that the service we provide has never been more important to our customers. From keeping connected to staying educated and entertained, I’m proud that we’ve served the nation. Across our brands we have introduced over 20 new initiatives to help the country adapt during these tough times and continue to help as we return to a new normality.”

    March – Keeping connected as lockdown begins

    When the UK entered lockdown on 23rd March, the nation embraced new, and old ways to keep connected. Zoom users on EE’s network increased fivefold during lockdown compared to earlier in the year. But most of the nation reached for the phone to keep in touch with loved ones, with over half of Brits dialing to stay connected. BT’s data shows that they had a lot to talk about, with a huge 90% increase in calls lasting over 5 minutes compared to February. Those not dialing were typing, with text messaging the second preferred communication method followed by video–calling.

    Lockdown meant we couldn’t see our family and friends, but for those directly affected by coronavirus being connected was more important than ever – BT supported the new Nightingale field hospitals to get connected quickly. The ExCeL Nightingale hospital was installed with 1,000 digital phones and handsets as well as high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity in just 48 hours. Additionally, over 260,000 NHS staff received the EE & BT unlimited mobile data offer, and EE donated 8,000 rechargeable power banks to the NHS.

    April – Upskilling the UK through tech

    With more time spent at home, the country found new ways to put their time to good use. Four in five Brits claimed they managed to stay productive and one in six found new ways to learn online. To help upskill the nation, BT launched Top Tips on Tech with ITV – a two week long daily series of how-to-guides during prime-time TV demonstrating digital skills like WhatsApp calls and booking online GP appointments. It wasn’t just individuals who suddenly needed to adapt their skills during lockdown, BT reached over 40,000 business owners and employees with digital skills training too.

    With children at home and many parents becoming teachers overnight, BT’s Barefoot platform supported parents and teachers with home-schooling. The programme reached nearly 70,000 primary school teachers and two million pupils across UK primary schools, with the ‘Learn at Home’ page seeing a 1,100% spike in traffic during lockdown.

    May – Discovering a Work / Life balance

    All bets were off in May as the suspension of live sports and events meant many found new ways to feel a sense of community through live fitness sessions, online gaming, and online concerts. In a show of support to the nation crisis, BT Sport customers donated a total of £1m to the NHS through paused subscription payments.

    For singletons and couples living apart, dating also went virtual. 16 – 24-year olds were the most willing to try their hand at virtual dating, with one in ten using video calls for dating in lockdown. EE’s network usage reveals dating apps including Tinder, Bumble, Match, Hinge and Grindr saw over 70% more users compared to the beginning of lockdown.

    As working from home became the norm, BT undertook one of the UK’s biggest office to home working migration, with nearly 10,000 Consumer call centre staff from BT, EE and Plusnet becoming virtual contact centres. Commutes drastically reduced and became a matter of travelling downstairs, BT data showed workdays start later, with the spike in Wi-Fi calls shifting from 8am to 9am, whilst 11am remaining the peak call time.

    With the home now also becoming an office and a school, the nation adapted to achieve a work-life balance. Half of those surveyed claim they’ve improved their habits in the past 100 days, and this includes being more active. One fifth of adults explored their local area by exercising outside during lockdown and seven in ten said they used fitness technology, including virtual workout programmes, at home during lockdown.

    June – Looking to the future

    Half of Brits claimed they changed their habits for the better during lockdown and looking to the future, BT research shows the nation is assessing the changes they will keep in place. Four out of 10 agree that they have discovered new digital skills they plan to keep using after lockdown including booking virtual appointments, mobile banking, and online GP services.

    With the majority of schools not set to re-open until September, BT will provide in-need families with six months free access to the UK’s largest Wi-Fi network which extends to 5.5 million Wi-Fi hotspots around the country to help keep children learning.

    Almost a third of Brits will continue to shop online for non-essentials, yet over a quarter admitted they can’t wait to get back to the high street. An overwhelming 89% of survey respondents said they’re in favour of shops having virtual booking systems rather than physical queues.

    Sony Xperia 1 ii comes to Vodafone UK Mon, 22 Jun 2020 08:54:41 +0000 Whilst Sony might have struggled in more recent times to keep up with the likes of Samsung and even Huawei, there is no denying their heritage in the mobile market, and it only takes a decent seller to help turn the tide.

    With their new Xperia 1 ii device, the company have a 5G flagship with impressive 4k display as well as some serious camera tech on the back.

    Finally on sale after what felt like being an age of waiting, it looks like Vodafone have taken a chance on this device, and at launch have a seriously good offer if you are looking to buy.

    For now, anyone picking up on a Pay Monthly plan will save £202 over what will be the normal pricing after the offer ends.

    Starting at just £46 a month for 6GB of data, there are many more options available, including the Unlimited Max for unlimited high speed data for £61 a month.

    Whilst this still is a hefty amount to pay monthly, considering the £1200 sim free price Sony have set, this seems cheaper than some of the competition out there and looks to get Sony back in the game once again.

    Anyone looking to order can find out more information here, but get in quick before you miss out on the discount.

  • Vodafone expands coverage with first sharing deal under new Shared Rural Network initiative
    • Devauden, a small village in the Wye Valley, Wales, is the first rural community to receive new mobile coverage under the £1 billion programme
    • The Shared Rural Network aims to make 4G available to 95% of the UK landmass

    Vodafone has expanded 4G coverage in rural Wales with the first sharing deal completed under the new Shared Rural Network (SRN) initiative. Devauden, a small village in the Wye Valley, is the first rural community to receive new mobile coverage under the £1 billion SRN programme.

    The Shared Rural Network is a joint initiative between Government and the UK’s four mobile network operators. The programme aims to use mast sharing on existing sites in rural areas where some, but not all providers, have coverage.  It also plans to build new-shared masts to connect areas that currently have no coverage at all.

    “Everyone should have mobile coverage, and everyone should have the benefit of a choice of networks. It is great that the industry has come together to improve coverage across the UK, and I’m proud that we’re leading the way. Our engineering team has done a great job in getting our coverage on to this site, despite the limitations of lockdown.”

    Vodafone UK Chief Executive Officer Nick Jeffery said:

     “Residents and businesses in Devauden will soon be getting better mobile coverage as it becomes the first village to benefit from our £1 billion deal with mobile phone companies to banish rural ‘not spots’ for good.

    Our world-leading Shared Rural Network will bring high-quality 4G coverage to 95 per cent of the UK by 2025 and means people will benefit from a good signal wherever they live, work or travel.”

    Digital Infrastructure Minister Matt Warman said

    “The ability to be connected wherever you are is becoming increasingly important, no more so than under the current circumstances.

    To have the first site sharing deal in the UK under the Shared Rural Network initiative in rural Wales is fantastic. People living in and around Devauden will now have greater choice about which provider they choose and it will help support local businesses.”

    Welsh Government Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport, Lee Waters MS, said:

    Bringing mobile and internet services to rural communities scattered across hard-to-reach parts of the country has always been difficult, and expensive. Mountains, valleys, waterways and woodlands are all barriers to building essential infrastructure. By sharing sites, Shared Rural Network will make rural coverage more cost-effective and less disruptive.

    ·         Vodafone is to open 65 stores today, followed by around 300 over the coming weeks

    ·         New ‘concierge’ role will help customers and identify key workers so they can be helped quickly if needed

    ·         Social distancing, thorough cleaning and hygiene measures will be in place, in line with Government Covid-19 guidelines

    ·         Extensive training and engagement has taken place prior to opening to make sure everyone returning feels confident in the measures put in place

    ·         700 Vodafone store colleagues will be working from home to serve those  who can’t (or don’t want to) visit their local store

    15th June 2020, London: Vodafone will today be opening 65 of its stores to welcome customers who want face-to-face service back on the high street – with major changes to ensure everyone stays safe. These openings follow the four stores we opened in Northern Ireland last week.

    A further 300 stores will be opening in the coming weeks, although some inner London stores will remain closed to avoid colleagues having to take public transport to get to work. For those customers who can’t or don’t want to visit a store, 700 Vodafone retail colleagues will remain at home providing support over the phone and via chatbots.  Customers can use Vodafone’s extensive self-service support on the My Vodafone app.

    Customers visiting our stores will be greeted by our new ‘concierge’, who will identify any key workers so they can get the help they need in a timely fashion.

    We have been keen to do everything we can to make sure our colleagues are happy with the arrangements for bringing them back to stores, so we have been working closely with them to develop the plans and listening to their feedback.  They told us in our employee survey that they are very supportive of the measures we are putting in place.

    To ensure our colleagues and customers remain safe, we are opening stores with these major changes:

    • Our new concierge role will help customers and identify key workers that may need to be seen sooner than other customers
    • Stores will be cleaned using Citrox Protect which creates a barrier to the virus
    • Stores have been re-organised to ensure social distancing
    • No devices will be on display
    • Retail colleagues will be given their own ‘station’ to be used ONLY by them
    • Retail colleagues will be on a rota so they are always with the same colleagues
    • Retail colleagues will be given their own stylus so they can help customers without having to touch their phones
    • Alcohol based hand gel will be placed at all entry points to the store
    • Full PPE available for all colleagues (full face visor, face masks, gloves)
    • Stores will only be taking contactless and card payments

    We are discouraging our colleagues from using public transport, and we’re not opening stores where public transport is the main means of getting to work at this stage. And of course, anyone who is vulnerable will be able to continue working from home, serving those customers who want to access our online and phone support services.

    “Keeping our customers and retail colleagues safe is our number one priority.  This is why we have put in weeks of planning, taking time to talk to people returning to store and listening to feedback so everyone feels comfortable and has confidence in the measures we have put in place.

    We’ve seen in other countries, such as Italy and Spain, that some customers prefer to go in store rather than call us or chat online and we are keen to meet this need. Our phased approach means we can offer a personalised, local service and start to re-boot the high street, while at the same time not forgetting those who still want to be helped from home.

    “I’d like to say a personal thank you to all our colleagues who have shown resilience and adaptability in the face of huge change.”

    Max Taylor, Consumer Director, Vodafone UK said:

    We closed our 412 stores at the beginning of lockdown and quickly re-deployed store colleagues to work from home to serve customers. Phone lines were diverted to managers’ phones and everyone was trained on webchat within a week. The training to equip people with the skills they need to meet the changing demands of the business has continued – colleagues returning have completed 13 modules covering operations, behaviours and wellbeing. Everyone returning to store will have completed five hours of additional training before they come back.

    Our employee and customer safety is of course the top priority and Vodafone will keep a close eye on the situation and amend store operations where necessary.

    Vodafone and Three confirm reopening plans Fri, 05 Jun 2020 15:56:40 +0000 We have had emails from both Vodafone UK and Three UK confirming their plans to reopen stores this month in some form or another to help customers

    Below are both releases with more information if you were interested.

    From 15 June, Vodafone will be re-opening 65 of our retail stores, and if all goes well, we’ll open around 300 more a week later.

    At this early stage, we’ll be keeping some of our stores in inner London closed because they are in locations that most of our retail colleagues would need to take public transport to get to. We don’t want them to do this at the moment.

    The safety of our colleagues and customers remains our number one priority.

    Our retail teams have done a fantastic job while working from home, quickly getting trained up to support our customers online using webchat and other tools. But many of our customers still prefer face-to-face help, support and guidance.

    In fact, we’ve learned from our stores in Italy and Spain that around half of store interactions are with customers just needing technical support and advice – we’re not all about selling phones and broadband services.

    It’s also worth bearing in mind that half of our stores are franchise businesses run by self-employed people. We’ve supported them during lockdown, but at some point, we, and they, have to reopen. So the question became how to do this as safely as possible and how to do it in a way that ensures our retail colleagues feel comfortable going back into the stores.

    We are one team and I want everyone to feel comfortable with the decision to re-open the stores

    Our specialist retail teams came up with preliminary plans, but we made sure to check them with our retail colleagues first. Because the people who work in our stores understand their stores best and understand our customers best.

    We’ve worked really hard to make this a dialogue, listening and responding to our colleagues’ concerns and adapting our plans accordingly.

    New-style coronavirus safe Vodafone store
    The new Vodafone store lay-out ensures the safety of staff and customers

    Of course, we’ve taken all the steps you’d expect to make our stores are safe as possible. We’ve:

    • deep-cleaned them and sprayed them with anti-bacterial treatments;
    • installed alcohol-based hand gel at all entrances, and provided personal protective equipment (PPE) to staff;
    • installed perspex protective screens at all our customer service points (that’s more than 2,000 stations rebuilt);
    • removed all display devices to reduce surface contamination risk (stock will only be brought out when we make a sale);
    • limited the number of customers allowed in store at any one time to maintain social distancing guidelines;
    • ensured staff have their own sales terminal that only they will use to reduce the chance of cross-contamination by other members of staff;
    • instigated set shift patterns so staff will always work with the same group of colleagues;
    • asked staff to avoid public transport, and if they can’t get to the store any other way, to continue working from home;
    • equipped staff with a personal stylus so they can help customers without the need to touch their devices; and
    • ensured our stores remain cashless to reduce contamination risk and the time it takes to process transactions.

    We’ve also reimagined the lay-outs of all our stores and, in some that are too small to allow effective social distancing, we’ve set up kiosks at the front door instead.

    And we wouldn’t be re-opening if we didn’t think our retail colleagues were happy with the safety measures we’ve taken. A survey of 1,540 of them revealed strong support for these precautions, because we took their feedback into consideration. It’s been a collaborative process all the way.

    Each retail colleague will receive training in how to work safely and responsibly in this new environment, and anyone who’s vulnerable – or living with someone vulnerable – will not have to return to work in-store. We understand that while for most people the risk is now thought by the Government to be manageable, this isn’t true for all.

    We’ll also continue to support our colleagues with online health and wellbeing consultations should they want them – the crisis may be receding, but it’s not over yet.

    So we believe we’ve taken every measure possible to keep our colleagues and customers safe, but we want to see how the first phase works in practice – and what we can learn – before we open all the other stores.

    We will keep listening and adapting as the situation changes

    And if there is a resurgence of COVID-19 in an area near where we have stores open, we can close them again and redeploy our staff to working from home, as we’ve done before.

    At Vodafone, our colleagues matter to us. We are one team and I want everyone to feel comfortable with the decision to re-open the stores. I’ve been delighted by the positive feedback and great insights shared by our retail colleagues so far, and by the way they adapted to new ways of helping our customers.

    We will keep listening and adapting as the situation changes, so we can help our customers in the way they prefer to be helped, while keeping colleagues as safe as possible.

    Finally, I’d like to give a huge thank-you to our retail teams for going above and beyond in their efforts to ready our stores for this new way of working. It makes me really proud to work for such an amazing company. Well done to all of you.

    Three UK to reopen more than 250 stores in England on 15th June

    • Number of customers allowed in store will be restricted initially along with reduced opening hours
    • New measures to be introduced to protect customers and staff
    • Stores in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will open at a later date

    5 June: Three UK has today announced it will be reopening more than 250 stores across England on 15 June, introducing new social distancing and operational measures to protect staff and customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    To ensure customers feel safe and supported, all reopened stores will be operating with reduced hours from 10:00-16:00. Anyone who attends a store will be admitted if the store has capacity or given a time to return if the store is busy.

    This is part of a phased reopening approach that will be continuously reviewed alongside government guidance to ensure that social distancing guidelines are adhered to.

    The number of people permitted instore will vary depending on the size of the store. When it is safe to do so, more customers will be allowed in store at one time.

    In this initial phase, Three is introducing a number of special measures and equipment, including:

    • Ensuring the health of Three staff: In line with government advice, any staff member displaying COVID-19 symptoms will be instructed to self-isolate.
    • Reduced staff – To ensure their safety, each store will operate with reduced staff, based on the size of the store.
    • ‘Wait here’ signs – Stores will display ‘wait here’ signs to manage the number of customers in stores at any one time.
    • Social distancing floor stickers – Floor stickers will help remind customers of the recommended two-metre social distancing rules.
    • Perspex screens – Stores will have screens on till point areas to protect customers and staff.
    • Hand sanitiser units – All stores will have hand sanitiser for customers to use when entering and leaving.
    • Customer handsets – Staff will be advised not to touch customer handsets unless completely essential. All staff will be provided with gloves.
    • Enhanced cleaning frequencies – More frequent cleaning of regular touchpoints to be introduced.

    Elaine Carey, Chief Commercial Officer, Three UK, said: “We have carefully considered how we can reopen our retail stores in a changed operating environment and will be introducing a number of new measures to help our colleagues and customers feel safe when visiting our stores.

    “The wellbeing of our people and customers has remained at the forefront of our decision making as we work through the impact of COVID-19. While we know our stores will look and feel very different, we’re looking forward to reopening our doors so that we can start to serve our customers on high streets and local communities once more.”

    Three stores in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will also reopen in due course, pending government guidance.

    For those customers unable to get to a store, support is available via the Three website or the Three app. Customers are able to have a one-to-one chat with an advisor on Three Store Now and product demos are available via Three Live
