OnePlus have today announced two new devices under the ‘8 Series’ banner, and as expected we have the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro, each with an impressive set of specifications but with some key differences.
First of all the OnePlus 8 features an impressive 6.55 inch display the company call ‘Fluid’ thanks to the 90hz refresh rate seen on the previous models but with improved colour accuracy and HDR10+ support making colours really stand out and offer a smooth experience.
You also get the in screen fingerprint sensor for fast unlocking and for using apps such as Google Pay for purchasing.
The triple camera setup on the back offers a 48 megapixel main sensor, a 16 megapixel ultra-side angle sensor, and a 2 megapixel Macro shooter for amazing close up photos in all lighting conditions and is one of the best cameras OnePlus have ever included on a smartphone.
The company has improved the way we capture photos of Cats or Dogs and tracks their faces when taking a photo giving you ultra clear and sharp pet photos we all love to share online and to friends.
On the front side there is a 16 megapixel camera which is great for selfies or for using on video chat, something we are all doing a lot more of these days.
Video recording is also impressive with 4K resolution paired with OIS and EIS for the ultimate in smooth video performance, something I was really impressed with on the older OnePlus 7 Pro.
When it comes to performance we have a Snapdragon 865 processor with X55 5G modem bringing you super fast downloads on the go thanks to 5G technology starting to roll out around the world, you also get either 8GB or 12GB of RAM and storage comes in at either 128GB or 256GB.
Dolby Atmos speakers allow the best quality audio whether its on your favourite game or watching back that movie you have downloaded and have a few minutes to catch up on.
Charging and battery performance is as impressive as always thanks to 30T Warp Charging, this goes from 1% to 50% charge in just 23 minutes meaning you are always ready for that heavy day of use as long as you have a few minutes to top up on the go thanks to the large 4300mAh battery included.
The OnePlus 8 Pro includes a lot of the above features such as fingerprint reader, the same processor with 5G support and the same RAM (the Pro does have an improvement called LPDDR5 for faster performance and better battery performance) and storage options, but really stands out in a few key differences.
The first difference is in the display where the size goes up to 6.78 inches, but also even better now offers 120hz refresh for the ultimate in smoothness and performance, so much so it has been rated A+ by DisplayMate and may be the most impressive display on a phone this year thanks to offering 120hz at QHD resolution.
Those of you who watch movies on the go also get MEMC which converts a normal 24fps movie into 120fps making it seem smooth like butter and no dropped frames, and with HDR Boost built in you get the best colour performance ever.
When it comes to the camera setup, the Pro features a Quad setup with some serious focus on performance (the pun was intended)
First of all there is a new 48 megapixel primary camera using the latest Sony IMX689 technology to bring some seriously great photos in all lighting conditions, you also get a 48 megapixel super wide angle camera which allows for not only stunning landscape photos where you want to get more of the scene, but also lets you take super macro photos up to 3cm away.
The third camera is a 8 megapixel Telephoto lens which gives you 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom for when you need to get that little bit closer to your subject.
The last camera on the back is a new 5 megapixel Colour Filter which gives you that extra artistic feel to your photos by having different filters
Video gets a welcome boost too thanks to 3-HDR giving you the best quality in all lighting conditions as well as audio zoom giving you an impressive 3D surround experience.
Over on the front something missing from the 7 and 7 Pro is the motorized pop-up camera which allowed the screen to be all screen and was something people loved, but did come with some drawbacks.
By removing the motor and using a small pinhole cutout of just 3.84mm, it allowed a new feature even more people wanted to see, IP68 rating meaning your OnePlus 8 Pro is water and dust resistant.
When it comes to charging and battery, you still get 30T Warp Charging via the included cable in the box, you also get the added benefit of Wireless charging too which is the first for OnePlus, you also get a larger 4510mAh battery to help power that screen technology and the 5G network.
Colours of both devices are Onyx Black or Glacial Green here in the UK, there are a few other options but these are not heading to this part of the world.
With the storage and RAM, the two options available are 8GB with 128GB of storage, or 12GB RAM with 256GB storage.
Finally on the software side, both come with OxygenOS 10.5 which brings with it an improved Dark Mode 2.0, Dynamic wallpapers, smart charging which learns when you start charging and when you take it off charging, and then only charges when needed to save the battery longevity, very handy.
Oh and also, Dual SIM support for 5G too so you can have work and personal SIM cards in at the same time and get the best performance without needing to switch phones or cards on the move.
The devices announced today go on sale today and costing is as follows.
OnePlus 8 8GB/128GB £599
OnePlus 8 12GB/256GB £699
OnePlus 8 Pro 8GB/128GB £799
OnePlus 8 Pro 12GB/256GB £899
Be sure to check back soon for full reviews on both the newly announced devices.
Also announced today is the OnePlus Wireless 30T Charger to allow you to Warp Charge your OnePlus 8 Pro faster than ever with no cables, and this comes at a price of £69 with shipping starting on the 21st April.
It would not be a OnePlus event without some update on a headset, and Bullets Wireless Z is the latest model costing just £69, down from the £99 the Bullets Wireless 2 cost so is a nice saving for anyone wanting to pickup a new headset.
